The Brain, Prisoner of Social Life

Nowadays there are many ways developed to manipulate and get to a general brainwash of society. In Psychology the brainwashing, also called thought reform is considered to be a side effect of social influence. Thinking about social influence makes you easy realize that it is actual in our lives every nanosecond we live, even when we are asleep.

It is easy to analyze by ourselves the idea of the social influences above ourselves and others. Individual prove to be some very good machines of influencing and reformatting the human thinking in a certain direction. Usually, our personality takes birth as an almost identical illustration of the social environment we live. These days, there is a general tendency that individual have, to change their habits, beliefs, attitudes, according to the environment they are acting as social beings, and what’s more important, according to the way the majority acts. This is, for instance, why pupils will have a certain behavior, students a different one, or pupils from different countries will act different.

Social influence materializes itself in some much known entities, such as education or media, or the persuasion method. At a glance it’s easy to view the frequency of these factors in our social lives. Usually, all these combined lead to a minimum brainwashing of individuals, without their consent or, even against their will. This is why, because, for example, individuals will go to school and form themselves in a certain direction, in order to do the right thing to do, even if it’s against their wish.

Another form of social brainwashing it’s taking place at the level of those institutions which isolate and make the individual total dependent on them, such as prison camps or totalistic cults. In these circumstances, the brainwasher, meaning the institution, has a large control above the individuals thinking and acting, and the dependency aggravate the side effects of the action on the people brain. It is thought that the isolation and dependency increase the possibility of brainwashing to occur, that this two variables are the premises of brainwashing. The isolation offers to the brainwasher the possibility to control the whole actions of the individual, so he can systematically break down the target’s old identity to the point that it doesn’t function and replace it with another set of behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that work in current environment.

Though, experts think the social influence cannot lead to a severe brainwash. It can be considered as an invisible and common way of influencing the way people think, but it doesn’t eradicate the personality. As a consequence, those individuals who were educated against their wish will at a certain point come back to their own being, their old beliefs or habits. Still, if the appropriate conditions for a continuous indirect brainwashing are present, the false personality can maintain a sufficient long period, to get the individual used and even dependent to it. In this case, some individuals do not have the capacity of returning to their real way of being, these are the weak persons, who leave themselves carried and guided by other people actions, by some general implemented rules, which become their style of living.
